Mercury exists in three forms.

Inorganic mercury – Inorganic mercury is abundant in the environment, most commonly as the minerals cinnabar and metacinnabar, and as impurities in other minerals.
Organic mercury – Formed through a complex environmental process, mercury can convert from inorganic to organic form when combined with carbon.
Mercury is a neurotoxin. This means it is poisonous to nerve tissue.
The phrase ‘mad as a hatter’ refers to the health impact of Mercury on those making felt hats in the early 1800s. Mercury was used to turn animal fur into felt.
